Pop supremacy and material culture, genocide and now Europe.

July 10th, 2011

In Malaysia and Singapore I felt like a fish out of water. The predominant music interest in Malaysia and Singapore is pop/ club/ techno. While riding in taxis, whilst eating roti at the mamuk stall at 8am…. Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Chris Brown reign supreme on TV screens, in malls, covered by bands who headlined their non-original music after me and won the crowd over. To the point where these songs are the first thing I hear in the morning when I wake up- re-produced by my inner voice! Day after day, my dislike for these invasive sounds made them sink deeper into my psyche. Enough about that. Singapore… cheap abundant prostitutes, ridiculous wealth, cool Habibi Lane shops, shoppers, shopping… Malaysia, pop music, shops, shopping, shoppers, great food, nice warmth… and the original artists I met five years ago are all getting on TV which is good to see.

Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia followed and gave me a really stark awareness of the realities of war, American Imperialism, Civil Imperialism and resilience. More on this topic at a later date… still processing for song content.

On my way to Europe for the first time, this is an area I invested a lot of time in booking and covers United Kingdom, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, France, Czech Republic, Switzerland… Tonight I will be in the Northern Hemisphere for the first time in my life… See you on the road.
